to the inauguration, can president obama hope for a new term. let's talk with debbie wassermann schultz. >> good morning. thanks for having me. >> congresswoman, let me ask you. we heard from the republicans on extending the debt ceiling for at least a three-month period. is this any signs of hope in terms of cooperation or more maneuvering? >> i think this unfortunately more a sign that republicans realize it was horribly damaging to them to continue to jeopardize the full faith and credit of the united states. now, it still does that because they are really perpetrating colossal uncertainty by proposing only to extend the debt ceiling increase by three months. i mean in a fragile recovery like the one we have we need to have certainty, we need to pay our bills, and we need to send president obama a clean debt ceiling increase. >> you also will need to have a budget in place in order to come to that debt ceiling debate as the republicans have laid it out at this point and you're also going to be dealing with the deficit and all of the other issues. so are you basically s

talk to a larger question. nia is completely right. the obama people have continued polling, polling, polling, polling. and they feel like they have the public on their side. and their choice of words. for instance, yesterday the president talked about education. education polls really well among women. so they know what they're doing when they play the outside game. >> well said. thank you so much. nia-malika henderson, welcome back to "hardball." glenn thrush. beginning to sound like a pack of moon shiners. remember them, chasing the revenuers out of town? you're watching "hardball," the place for politics. i just served my mother-in-law your chicken noodle soup but she loved it so much... i told her it was homemade. everyone tells a little white lie now and then. but now she wants my recipe [ clears his throat ] [ softly ] she's right behind me isn't she? of 2006, i think it was, president obama -- and 2008, by the way -- when he was a senator, he talked a lot about the debt ceiling. remember, president bush was in office at the time, so senator obama would probably be against some of the things he was talking about, particularly the debt ceiling. the senator called it irresponsible to increase the debt. listen to then-senator obama. >> the problem is that the way bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the bank of china in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents. number 43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome so we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back, $30,000 for every man, woman and child. that's irresponsible. it's unpatriotic. >>steve: there you've got the president, back then senator, back in the day saying that president of ours, he's running up the bills, and it would be unpatriotic what he's doing. and we cannot raise the debt limit. forward to his administration, and i think this is going to be the fourt

. there are a lot of americans out there who own guns who think president obama will want to take them away. >> well, that is true. as we talked about before. we're seeing an incredible swelling not only in the purchasing of guns but in the, in nra membership as well. i think that there is an expected, expectation on the part of the administration that the national rifle association's power is going to be quite, formidable and that they are not going to be able to pass everything in their legislative package, which as you mention is going to be outlined in specifics, soon. it will include, an assault weapons ban. it will include restrictions on magazine clips and high capacity ammunition. that is the kind of thing that will be fought hard by the nra. white house doesn't expect an assault weapons ban to pass but it will include it in its goals because they want to include everything in its goals. i think what they're expecting in the end to find consensus on is more like, i said, consensus and cooperation in the area of background checks and screening, before guns are purchased. maybe the closing of

and interested in talking to him too. >>> president obama urging congress to raise the debt ceiling to raise the budget and avoid another economic crisis. rich edson at the white house with details. hey, rich. >> good afternoon, tracy. president obama said will not entertain any other options on the debt ceiling except congress raising it without attached. congress ordered him to spend the money and must correspondingly raise the debt ceiling. he signed the president into law as levels generally below what he requested in his budgets. house republicans say they want any increase in the debt ceiling to be accompanied by spending cuts that exceed the amount of the debt ceiling increase. president obama said the election settled that. >> if we want to have a conversation about how to reduce our deficit, let's have that. we've been having that for the last two years. we had an entire campaign about it. and by the way the american people eye greed with me. that we should reduce our deficits in a balanced way that takes into account the need for us to grow this economy and put people back to work.

towards the country's spending limit once again, folks. you know what that means. talking about time to raise the debt ceiling, right? president obama warned he will not enter into another game of brinkmanship as he referred to it over the debt sealing with republicans. >> the issue here is whether or not america pays its bills. we are not a deadbeat nation. if congressional republicans refuse to pay america's bills on time, social security checks and veterans benefits will be delayed. investors around the world will ask if the united states of america is in fact a safe bet. the full faith and credit of the united states of america is not a bargaining chip. martha: a lot of talk about the president's demeanor at that news conference yesterday. we'll get into that a little bit more coming up but for now does this really come down to an issue of raising the spending limit or defaulting on our credibility as the president has talked about. let's bring in stuart varney, host of "varney & company" on fox business network. so, stuart, you feel the way he is framing this is incorrect? >> ye
